Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, to honour the patron saint of Ireland. Although I have a feeling the way many people celebrate the day would not be something Patrick would approve of. Although I may have taken part in such celebrations over the years.

St. Patrick is known for driving the snakes out or Ireland. Which is not a literal thing. There were no snakes. He just converted many of the various pagans to Christianity. Although the thought of Patrick with a car load of snakes, heading for the border is rather amusing.

There is apparently an Irish connection to my family tree somewhere. One of these days I may have to try to figure it out. Just to find out if some of the stories are true about where the family might have come from. It is quite possible there is no connection to Ireland at all.

There is a connection to the family name Ryer, which supposedly has an Irish connection. Although it may also be Norse. Plus a grandfather who had a middle name of O’Gyr. Certainly looks Irish, what with the O and all. But I have never found and reference in any book of Irish names, so maybe someone just made it up.

I could probably do one of those DNA tests or something to figure it out, but as they say, on St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish. So no matter where my heritage may lie, I can still celebrate the day.

Just not with green beer. Food colouring and beer were not meant to be together. Even on St. Patrick’s Day.
