The two staff members stabbed at Charles P. Allen High School earlier this week, have been released from hospital. In a tweet, the principle calls them Mr. Rogers and Ms. Light, although they haven’t been officially identified.
Since the incident, The Nova Scotia Teachers Union is pushing for the government to make schools safer.
A 15-year-old is currently facing murder charges after stabbing himself and the two staff members. He appeared in court Thursday morning where according to Global news, the bail hearing was pushed back to April 13.
President Ryan Lutes says the incident sparked a broader conversation, about violence in schools and access to mental health support.
Lutes said they are asking to reverse staffing cuts that were made at HRM’s most populated schools in 2021, and to enhance supervision and support for all high schools outside HRM. The Union is also asking for a comprehensive review to have a provincial strategy to reduce school violence.
Lutes said enrollment has jumped significantly in recent years, with classrooms becoming more complex but resources and staff levels haven’t kept pace.
Halifax Police have been to schools 424 times since 2018, resulting in 77 charges.
