Tonight’s Meal…Chain Pickerel!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many in the Tri Counties! It’s fishing season and with that comes trout, mackerel and what I like to call the Nova Scotia crocodile, chain pickerel! I’m sure you know they are an invasive species that have caused some havoc to our waterways, greatly reducing certain fish populations like trout. Check out this article for more info about the Water Wolf! nsinvasives.ca They basically will eat anything! I’ve even heard stories of them eating baby ducks and turtles, but can we eat them?

After doing some research and asking a fishing buddy, turns out we can! With the proper fishing license, you are allowed to bag 100 pickerel a day. That’s a lot of meat you could be eating! So why not turn a negative invasive species into a positive or at least a fillet! I couldn’t find many recopies online but I have been told that they have a very nice tasting white meat, they’re also very boney so be careful of that!

Do you eat Chain Pickerel? How do you prepare them? Leave your recipe on our Facebook page! Happy fishing!
