A Needed Distraction

I like to think I am just a bit ahead of the curve. I like watching Jeopardy and have been on a regular basis for a while now. But it seems that Mattea Roach and her winning streak have come around at just the right moment for a lot of people.

Now I will say, I don’t generally go out of my way to watch the show, but it is one of my top options. I like trivia. Over the years I have proven not too bad at it myself. I like to tell people that if it’s something really important, something that I really need to know, I’ll probably forget it in an instant. But some strange little tidbit of knowledge seems to stick with me. I have a head full of useless facts, and I like to see others who also have heads full of useless facts.

And yes, I do yell answers at the television while I watch. Sometimes you just have to. Especially when you know the answer and others, the ones actually on the show at the time, do not. I know the people on the show can’t hear me. I know it was actually taped weeks ago. But I still feel that if I yell loud enough at the TV, my answer will somehow manage to defy the laws of physics and travel back in time, across the continent, so they can hear me. And it makes me feel smarter. Which is the real important part.

But it’s a fun game, and you can actually learn a few things by watching it. So I find it a fun pastime.

Lately, it seems like everyone is joining in. Mattea Roach and her winning streak have got people around here talking. People I know who have never watched the show before and suddenly becoming fans. They are talking about it all over the place, it’s a regular item on the news and it’s all over social media.

Then again, it is a bit of a welcome distraction. With all the negative things going on in the world right now, it’s kind of nice to have that one half hour every weekday when non of those things matter. Really, Mattea and her winning streak have come along at a good time, giving us a short respite from other issues.

It would be really nice is we could somehow make the rest of the day the same.
