The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations will visit Saulnierville this week.
RoseAnne Archibald will head to the wharf on Thursday, where the Sipekne’katik First Nation launched a treaty lobster fishery last month.
In a release, the band says the National Chief will ‘bring remarks on behalf of AFN to address those standing with Sipekne’katik and all Mi’kmaq fisheries in recognition of their treaty rights.’
Sipekne’katik chief Mike Sack says it’s a great honour to host the chief and others, as they come to see the fishery and hear the ‘many challenges their people are encountering.’
He invites all communities affected by the Marshall Decision, to ‘illustrate to the world their support for one another, as they continue to be affected by seizures and infringements on their rights.’
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans have been keeping a close eye on activity in St. Mary’s Bay, and have made multiple seizures of lobster traps and vessels in relation to the enforcement of the Fisheries Act.
