Airlines around the world are making changes to their routes in the Middle East after a deadly plane crash near Tehran, Iran.
Transport Canada says Air Canada, the only Canadian air carrier which operates in the region, has altered its routes “to ensure the security of its flights into and over the Middle East.”
A Ukrainian International Airlines flight went down shortly after takeoff Wednesday, killing all 176 people on board, including 63 Canadians.
The Boeing 737-800 was on its way to Kiev when it reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he is “shocked and saddened” to see reports of the crash.
“Our government will continue to work closely with its international partners to ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated, and that Canadians’ questions are answered,” said Trudeau.
“Minister Champagne has been in touch with the government of Ukraine, and is speaking to relevant authorities and to international partners. Minister Garneau is also working with officials from Transport Canada, and is reaching out to his international counterparts.”

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the plane to crash.
Officials have been closely monitoring the airspace in the region as tensions rise between Iran and the United States.
In retaliation to an American drone strike which killed a top Iranian military leader, Iran has fired more than a dozen missiles at coalition military bases in Iraq.
