Almost Garden Time

The past couple of years have been a tough time to figure out when it’s time to put the garden in. Once upon a time, you know, like three years ago, you could pretty much count on the May 24 weekend as being the mark to get things planted. It was close, and there was always the chance you could still get a bit of frost, but usually you could get away with that time.

The last two years have been a bit tough for those putting in a garden. We have had frost into the early part of June. Will we this year?

Hard to tell. The forecast for the next few days looks promising. Not that it’s going to suddenly heat up or anything, but it would seem the temperature should at least stay above zero. And I don’t see any more snow in the forecast. Although, honestly, I really found it hard to take the forecast of snow last weekend seriously. But there it was.

So there’s the dilemma. The calendar is saying it might be okay. The weather is saying maybe, but is likely to throw a curve ball at the last minute. Is it time?

All I know is it’s close. Maybe not quite time for those tomato transplants yet, but close. At least it won’t hurt to turn the soil a bit. And maybe a plant or two.
