Almost Meta Ready

Things are starting to get… weirder. I was going to say weird, but I think we’re way beyond that.

With real estate prices getting crazy in the real world, apparently things are starting to do the same in the Metaverse. Investors have been putting money into buying imaginary real estate. And many seem convinced it’s going to pay off.

If you’ve been following the whole Metaverse thing, it’s far more than just something Facebook has started promoting. It’s basically a series of virtual reality places where those who are tech savvy think we’re all going to want to spend our time before long. We just strap on the virtual reality goggles or helmet and interact with others, go about our day, go to work, do other things, all while never leaving the house.

I’m sure this sounds perfect to some people. I’m not so sure I want any part of it.

And while I’ve been confused for a while now about the whole concept of NFTs or Non Fungible Tokens, which are kind or digital representations of real art that people have been spending large amounts of money on, not it seems like virtual real estate is becoming a big thing.

Celebrities and others have been buying up very expensive houses in places that don’t exist. They then think they will some day be able to sell these virtual places at an actual profit. And they’re spending millions of real dollars on this virtual real estate.

There are people who think this will actually become the next big thing. I’m not convinced it’s not a scam. And who’s to say a server won’t crash somewhere and everything will disappear.

And it’s not like I haven’t spent time in virtual worlds. I’ve put in my time collecting fruit and bugs in Animal Crossing. Not to mention the fishing. But outside of what it might cost me to buy a game, I’m not going to shell out big bucks for real estate that isn’t real. Sorry. Just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Maybe it will some day, but I’m not ready to bet my life savings on it just yet. In fact, when the time comes to move to a virtual world, I’m thinking I probably won’t need a house. I’ll just virtually live on a virtual beach spending my time sipping on virtual drinks with little virtual umbrellas in them.

Besides, now that virtual real estate is starting to take off, you know it’s only a matter of time before someone comes up with the idea of virtual property taxes. Don’t know about you, but I have enough of that sort of thing to deal with in my real life.

So if you need me, I’ll be under that virtual tree just down the virtual beach.
