Avoiding Rot

The time is coming to get the garden in for this year. There are a lot of things that could be planted now. And a couple that I am a bit wary of just yet. The last couple years we’ve had frost, or at least frost warnings into early June.

But the full moon is late in the month this year. Like, on Thursday. Maybe that means we won’t be seeing frost warnings pop up into June this year. So maybe I can get my tomatoes in the ground sooner, rather than later.

I have had some issues with bottom rot over the past few years. They say it is a calcium deficiency that causes bottom rot in tomatoes. To avoid that, you should make sure the temperatures aren’t going to be too cold. Or don’t fertilize them with too much nitrogen. Or don’t water them too much. Or make sure they get enough water. Or maybe egg shells in the soil to help with the calcium. Or even Tums. I have seen a couple articles claiming you should put Tums in the holes before the plant.

While that may prevent the tomatoes from getting heartburn, I’m not sure what it does for the tomatoes other than that.

There seems to be a lot of different solutions. I’m not sure any of them work. And some are hard to control. Like the water. If we get a summer like last year when it rains for forty days and forty night, and then rains a bit more. I’m not sure how you prevent them from getting too much water. Short of standing there, holding an umbrella for my tomatoes.

But a bit of bottom rot won’t stop me from trying. Although I plan to try to avoid it. But are the fruit flavoured Tums better then the mint ones?
