A pair of axe throwers from Barrington are headed to the World Championships.
Suzy Atwood and Darren Hudson are among those who will represent Canada in Sweden this weekend.
The pair have been throwing axes for years and are preparing for this month’s Canadian Axe Throwing Championship in Liverpool.
Hudson says people in Sweden have their own thoughts of what Canadians are like.
“They look to Canada as this wilderness nation that is full of lumberjacks. Europeans think of Canada as this great escape and beautiful nature and of course, representing Canada, they have great expectations.”
All competitors must throw an axe weighing at least three pounds, more than 24 inches in length and a blade not exceeding six inches on the face.
Hudson says the competition will be tough especially the hosts from Sweden and representatives from other European countries.
“I’m thrilled to be going to this great event. It’s been a long time in the making. We’ve been really setting our sights on Sweden for the last two years and we’re thrilled to be taking team Canada there for our chance to compete.”
The three day tournament begins Friday with the preliminary round of throws.
There are at least 12 Canadians competing in the event.
