Bear Head Energy receives approval on Strait of Canso project

A Nova Scotia energy company has received approval for a new facility in Richmond County.

The Minister of Environment and Climate change approved Bear Head Energy Inc.’s plans for an energy facility on the Canso Strait.

The green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage, and loading facility was first registered for environmental assessment on Feb. 1, 2023, with the public being able to offer their input until Mar. 23, 2023.

The company estimates that the facility will produce 2 million tonnes of ammonia per year. The ammonia will then be shipped worldwide by a fleet of 40 to 60 special marine carriers.

Construction on the facility will begin in 2024 with production starting in 2027.
