Berry Different

It’s Wimbledon time. For those who think Wimbledon is all about the tennis, you’re partially correct. For many, it’s as much about the strawberries.

It’s a tradition to have a dish of strawberries and cream during Wimbledon. For those of us who don’t have a reserved seat behind the royal box, that might be about as close as we get to being there. But apparently, there are other ways to enjoy our berries.

First, if you are one of those people who eat strawberries right out of the refrigerator, you’re doing it wrong. At least according to many experts. We should be taking our berries out of the fridge and giving them time to reach room temperature. That way, we get to enjoy all the many different overtones of flavour in our strawberries.

The other thing is there are apparently a lot of different things that go well with strawberries. We may think of things like cream, a bit of sugar, maybe a biscuit and some whipped cream. But how about some nice grated parmesan?

Cheese that smells a bit like stinky feet may not be something you think of putting on your strawberries, but it apparently goes well with them. At least according to people who breed strawberries in the U.K. They encourage us to be a bit more adventurous with what we put with out strawberries.

They also pair well with things like basil, mint, black pepper, and even chili. They also say balsamic vinegar goes well with berries. As does crab.

It would seem there are a lot of possible options to eat with your strawberries. Of course, this is coming from people who develop strawberries, so they want to see us eating more strawberries. But some of these things do sound interesting. I may have to search for a few new recipes while the berries are with us.
