Big Changes Coming to the Motor Vehicle Act – Here’s What You Should Know!

If you can believe it, The Motor Vehicle Act was first introduced over 100 years ago and hasn’t had a full rewrite since the 1920s! With an ever-changing world, the government has reshaped the rules of the road with an updated act. Here are some of the major changes coming our way, most likely in early 2026:

More Protection for Vulnerable Road Users

  • New category for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, construction workers, and emergency responders.
  • Stronger penalties: Fines can double, and drivers may lose their license if they injure or kill a vulnerable road user.

Modern Distracted Driving Rules

  • Updated to cover current technology (not just texting).
  • Includes smartphones, tablets, and in-vehicle screens.

Inclusive Cycling & Active Transportation

  • Clearer rules of the road for cyclists.
  • Framework to support safe walking and wheeling networks.

Child Passenger Safety & Vehicle Standards

  • Improved child seat regulations.
  • Better standards for driver visibility and vehicle condition.

Emergency Vehicles & Emerging Vehicle Types

  • Clearer rules for school buses, emergency vehicles, and new vehicle types like electric cars and micromobility devices (e-scooters, etc.).

Easier Updates & Municipal Authority

  • Language simplified for municipal traffic authorities.
  • Act designed as a framework, so regulations can be updated quickly as technology evolves.

Registry Modernization

  • Digital options for licensing, registration, and permits.
  • Improved services for citizens.
