Maybe I should change to birds I did not see in my back yard. But I’m going to continue with my back yard bird list. In spite of the fact I have nothing new to add this week.
Not that I didn’t see any birds. There are lots of birds to be seen. Especially since we were allowed to expand out yards a bit this weekend. So I saw a few black ducks, a pileated woodpecker, a downy woodpecker (I think. You almost have to walk up and measure the beak to tell the difference between a downy and a hairy woodpecker), two belted kingfishers (although it may have been one flying down the shore to make it seem like two, and a red winged black bird. They seem to enjoy just hanging out on random sticks in the middle of a swamp. I don’t know why, but they seem to like it.
This isn’t to say I didn’t spend some time in the backyard. I did. And I saw birds. Just no new birds to add to the list.
I seem to have an abundance of cardinals in my back yard. I’m not complaining. They are certainly beautiful and the colour does stand out. I have a feeling there could be a nest not too far away. With any luck, there will be even more cardinals. But a bit of variety in back yard birds would also not be a bad thing.
In any case, none of the above are being added to the list since they were not spotted in the back yard. Although I may have to reconsider a back yard expansion if I want to expand the list. Or maybe find more excuses to spend even more time in the yard.
