I can say I’m going to make a list of birds I see in my back yard, but that doesn’t mean the birds are going to show up to be seen. In fact, it could be the opposite.
Before I decided to make the list, I had been seeing both gold and purple finches, a few pigeons and, of course, mourning doves. Mourning doves seem to be just a bout everywhere… except in my back yard when I decide to make a list of the birds I see there.
I also made the decision to not include birds I saw while driving. This was more of a safety thing. I felt that driving off the road while trying to identify a bird was probably not the best idea. So no birds seen while driving. Which means I can’t use the red tailed hawk that was perched on a wire near Exit 13 this morning. Nice looking bird. But not a back yard bird.
My list from last week did grow to eight. Robins were added. I had expected them the first weekend, but they took their time showing up. I was also hoping for pictures of sparrows so I could maybe get an exact identification on the sparrows. Again, there has been a lack of co-operation from the sparrows as far as sitting nearby and holding still.
The cardinals have no such issue. I seem to have cardinals. I haven’t gotten a picture of the female yet, but I have gotten a few of the males. Then again, bright red sort of stands out pretty much everywhere right now.
So the overall list is at eight:
crows
starlings
black capped chickadees
white breasted nuthatch
sparrows
blue jay
cardinals
robins
I’ll let you know how it goes this week.
