Bridgewater Man Facing Charges For Assaulting And Uttering Threats To Police

An investigation into an intoxicated driver turned up a loaded gun and a disturbing plan last week in Bridgewater.

On Wednesday evening, Bridgewater Police responded to a report of an impaired driver on Hillcrest Street to find a man displaying many signs of impairment.

The man resisted arrest and was transported to the Bridgewater Police Services detachment where he refused to give a breath sample.

During the investigation, the man threatened the officers, claiming he had a loaded gun at home and had planned to use it to gun down police as they responded to a 911 call at his residence.

He also threatened to shoot an RCMP officer he knew personally, and went on to assault two officers while at the detachment.

Police say they searched the man’s residence and found a carelessly stored rifle with a loaded magazine.

Stephen Richard Burton of Bridgewater is facing charges of impaired operation of a conveyance, refusal to provide a breath sample, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, three counts of uttering threats, breach of probation, careless storage of a firearm and possessing a firearm without a licence.

He has been remanded into custody and will undergo a 30-day psyche assessment. Burton is expected to appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court on Feb. 14.
