Bridgewater’s Mayor is upset about the way some people are treating each other online following Wednesday’s announcement from the province on moving to Phase 5 and proof of vaccination coming next month for those 12 and up.
In a social media post Thursday, Mayor David Mitchell said he’s disappointed by “the steady stream of hurtful comments being made toward fellow citizens which include finger pointing, name calling, swearing and even worse.”
The comments prompted Mitchell to take to Facebook to express his disappointment in the latest exchanges.
“What it seems like was when the news of the vaccine requirements, the mandate, the passport, whatever you want to call it, it took nothing but an instant to divide us again,” said Mitchell in an interview Friday.
Mitchell added it’s a division which needs to stop, describing that initially the pandemic made the community come together.
“I just really wanted to remind people that we have to stick together in this, we can’t be lashing out at friends, neighbours, and family,” said Mitchell. “At the end of the pandemic, because there will be an end, we’re still a community and I don’t want to be a fractured community.”
In his post, Mitchell cited, “the last 19+ months have been brutal on all of us.” and asked for more people to have some compassion and understanding, adding in far too many cases, that didn’t happen.
