Bridgewater Sells Girl Guide Cabin to Masonic Society

The first Girl Guide Cabin in Canada has been sold in Bridgewater.

The town sold the property at 93 Dominion Street to the Bridgewater Masonic Society.

The proceeds of the sale, $84,042.14, will be given to Girl Guides Canada and a percentage will go to the local chapter.

Mayor David Mitchell says the building had operating costs just under $10,000 a year and capital costs upwards of $100,000.

“It was going to be a challenge to pay for that and when we approached Girl Guides Canada, because they were the single user in that facility, they actually said they were divesting themselves of these facilities across Canada. They didn’t have any interest as a national organization in keeping this building.”

The Girl Guide Cabin was built in 1934 and was deeded to the Town of Bridgewater a year later.

The town has installed a small monument at the property commemorating its historical significance.
