Bring Back The Dough Ball

So the whole “kiwi on pizza” thing started us talking about pizza around here. Mike brought up the fact that the “pizza saver” will soon be celebrating an anniversary… sort of.

That’s the little plastic doll sized table they put in the middle of your pizza to stop the box from hitting the cheese. Cause no one wants to bite into a slice of pizza and get bits of cardboard.

It was a bit of a surprise that the little contraption has only been around since the 80’s. Although there are stories that it was invented back in the 70’s, but then the patent was allowed to lapse and someone else came up with similar miniature plastic patio furniture.

While keeping us all safe from chewing cardboard is certainly commendable and a major service to humanity, it is one of the ultimate examples of a single use plastic. And just because no one has spotted a sea turtle with a little plastic table stuck in its nose doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem.

When it comes to single use plastics, this is one we could get rid of and gain something.

That something would be the thing that pizza places did for years before the pizza saver was invented… the ball of dough in the center of the pizza.

I loved the ball of dough. It was the first thing I went for when a pizza arrived. Flip up the lid and go right for the ball of dough. There would be just a touch of sauce and cheese, but mostly it was just a ball of cooked dough. An appetizer they would throw in for free.

My apologies to fans of the little plastic table, but for the sake of the planet… bring back the ball of dough.
