But… What About Wet Feet

Tomorrow is the day. Plastic bags will start to disappear from Sobeys.

Not that I don’t have enough plastic bags laying around to last me for some time to come, but in some ways I will miss them.

For years, we’ve been spoiled. We have had free garbage bags, free tote bags… any number of things you might be able to think of. Even free foot coverings for those slushy days.

That’s the big one I’m sure a lot of people don’t understand. Around here, where winter is largely slush season, we know from experience that winter boots can really not be depended on to keep the feet dry. They try, but most of them are really not up to the job. So it’s not unusual to see people stuff their feet in a plastic grocery bag, then into their boots.

I know, the plastic bags are bad for the environment. And they’re not hard to replace. I certainly have enough of those cloth bags around the house to carry home half a store. I just have to remember to take them to the store. It will take some doing, but I will adjust.

So I have tote bags. I can figure out the garbage bag side of it. But what about the feet? No amount of cloth bags will be keeping your feet dry in the winter.

I’m just hoping the end of the plastic grocery bag doesn’t put too big a strain on the health care system, due to the number of people walking around with set feet.

So I’ve got a little stash of plastic grocery bags set aside. You know, for special occasions. Like the next time we get slush. The way this year is going, I’m thinking that will be Sunday.

That is slush day, isn’t it?
