Canadian premiers unite in Washington to counter tariff threats

Canadian premiers have converged on the U.S. capital to address the looming threat of new tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump.

This historic visit marks the first time all 13 premiers have united for a joint mission in the U.S.

This unprecedented joint mission is led by Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Quebec Premier François Legault, who is at the forefront of discussions with U.S. lawmakers, business leaders, and labour representatives.

The Canadian delegation aims to emphasize the critical economic relationship between Canada and the United States, focusing on issues such as jobs, energy, critical mineral supply chains, border security, and immigration.

The premiers are particularly concerned about the potential impact of these tariffs on Canadian exports and are urging U.S. officials to reconsider the proposed measures.

“Let’s stop wasting time and energy in an effort fighting each other, threatening tariffs that will only hurt workers, businesses, and hurting hard-working people who are just looking to get ahead in life,” Ford said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, while attending a summit in Paris gave his reactions to the recent steel tariffs imposed by the U.S.

“These tariffs are unjustified. Canada is the U.S.’s closest ally, and our economies are deeply integrated,” Trudeau said.

He highlighted that Canadian steel and aluminum are crucial to key American industries like defense, shipbuilding, and automotive.

“We will be working with the American administration over the coming weeks. to highlight the negative impacts on Americans and Canadians of these unacceptable tariffs,” Trudeau said.

The visit has garnered significant attention, not only for its economic implications but also for the united front presented by the premiers.
