Growing up, Mom always put real candy canes on our tree. My brother and I would eat them until they were gone and she would buy more the next Christmas season to put on the tree.
I never thought anything of it until I was an adult and visiting the in-laws and other new relatives and was told “we don’t eat those candy canes on the tree, they’re probably 30 years old and they are only for decorating” Not eat candy? Seriously? (I wonder what the expiry date on candy canes would be?)
Did you or your family do this?
I kind of do something similar – Christmas isn’t Christmas without a bowl of barley toy candy sitting out. I don’t eat the stuff. I just like to look at it.
