CAT Ferry Season in Jeopardy

Bay Ferries has announced that the Cat ferry will not run until late summer, if at all.

The company made an announcement Monday afternoon to suspend reservations until further notice.

CEO Mark MacDonald says they are continually dealing with U.S. Customs and assessing when they might be able to start service.

He says they are not able to confidently give a start-up date.

“So we took the decision which was reflected in yesterday’s announcement to say, in effect, that we’re unable to project a date. We don’t think it would be earlier than the end of the summer.”

He also points out that the company has very limited options on which ports can be used.

“If we delayed going to Bar Harbor for a year, would the opportunity disappear? And we already knew or were satisfied in our own minds that the long term opportunity didn’t exist in Portland. Those are the only two places.”

Passengers are being offered alternate passage, where available, between Saint John and Digby on MV Fundy Rose.
