Chester-St.Margaret’s MLA Charged With Impaired Driving

A local MLA has been charged with impaired driving.

Chester-St.Margaret’s MLA Hugh MacKay released a statement yesterday indicating the incident took place over the weekend.

In the release, MacKay says he has struggled with alcohol addiction issues for several years and has always been open about the fact that he is a recovering alcoholic who has been in treatment since 2004.

Stephen Tobin, with the Liberal Caucus Office says MacKay will be taking some time away from the public eye.

“That’s not been determined at this time. We’re respecting his privacy at this time, he and his family. Once they’re done dealing with this difficult situation, I’m sure that information will become available.”

MacKay has apologized and asks for privacy for he and his family as he seeks professional help.

Meanwhile, MADD Canada’s Regional Manager Susan MacAskill says hearing of a public figure like Hugh MacKay being charged with impaired driving is disappointing.

“The standards that would have them comply with the law would be applicable to them ,even moreso where they’re in the public eye. They’ve been chosen by constituents to be in a role of leadership and their accountability to their constituency is really important.”

MacAskill says there is no reason for anyone to be doing drugs or drinking alcohol before driving.

She says impaired driving laws are in place to protect everyone.

And a situation like this is a reminder for people not to drink and drive.
