Chicken Or Eggs? Maybe Both!

I was just cruising around my Facebook page the other day when I noticed an ad someone had shared. I usually don’t pay a lot of attention to ads on the internet, but this one got my attention. It was for a hen rental service.

I know back yard chickens have been a bit of a thing over the past few years. I think it’s great, although I really don’t want any myself. For those who do, it could be the perfect way to try out raising hens without too big a commitment.

You can rent a coop, complete with hens, delivered to your back yard. You get full instructions on how to care for your hens and can proceed to harvest your own fresh eggs. Without fully committing to long term hen ownership.

I will say I enjoy fresh, free range eggs. I know others who have hens and have occasionally gotten eggs from them. It might be just me, be they do seem to taste better. But I still don’t want the responsibility of hens in the back yard. You can take a dog with you if you want to leave for a few days. While you theoretically can get a hen to just hop in the car for a drive, it probably isn’t going to be the same. And then there’s the concern about them crossing the road. Too much to worry about.

But still, it’s an interesting idea. A quick Google search came up with hen rental companies all over the place. They seem to be everywhere. You make a phone call and hens appear in your back yard. If you decide you don’t want them, someone will come get them. They will even pick them up for winter storage, so you need not worry about keeping your hens warm on cold winter nights. Although things like foxes and raccoons would suddenly be more of a concern.

It seems like a pretty strange idea at first, but at the same time, a very good idea.

And in this case, you will actually know the answer to that old question. You get the hens first, then the eggs. Although I suppose you could try it the other way.
