Christmas On The Side

I was doing a little last minute planning for Christmas dinner. The main dish is set. We thought briefly about a ham, but decided to stick with turkey. We have had other main dishes over the years. There was the year we cooked a goose. And discovered that geese are rather fat little birds. We didn’t know that and cooked it uncovered, in the oven. After the smoke cleared it was rather tasty.

But over the years the feast has changed. And there are still adjustments we like to make. There are just so many choices.

For instance, there was a few years where we made a potato casserole. Whipped potatoes with sour cream and cream cheese mixed in. It was delicious. But it really didn’t go well with gravy, so we dropped that to appease the gravy lovers.

I kind of like Brussels sprouts. Particularly baked with bacon. However the sprout is not a universally loved vegetable.

Squash is a favourite, so some form of squash will likely be on the menu. The kids all seem to like carrots, so they will probably make it to the list as well. There are a couple people who like turnip, so that will probably make the list.

Although I would like to see parsnips added to the carrots. And again baked in the oven. Possibly with a drizzle of maple syrup. I think they are really good that way. But children do not always feel that way about changes to one of their go to veggies.

There is also the possibility we will need something green, just for the colour contrast. Like broccoli. Or maybe green beans.

I guess really, if I were to have all the side dishes I really wanted for Christmas dinner I would need about six Christmas dinners. Different sides with each one.

I did Google Christmas dinner side dishes. I never knew there were so many ways to prepare potatoes or Brussels sprouts. And there are many other options that sound so good as well.

Maybe we should just have a meal made up of side dishes.
