Coastal Action Celebrates 25 Years of Conservation

Conservation at work for the last 25 years.

Coastal Action, formerly known as the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation, marked its silver anniversary Thursday night in Mahone Bay.

Executive Director, Brooke Nodding, says their organization was created primarily because there was a lack of sewage treatment in Lunenburg.

Something they helped remedy.

“A lot of our early work was around working with all three levels of government and trying to secure sewage treatment for the town of Lunenburg. When Lunenburg opened up their sewage treatment plant in 2003, that was another one of our successes as well.”

She says that issue is coming full circle in terms of the health of Lunenburg harbour.

Nodding says they also played a role in monitoring water quality in the LaHave River and working with Stella Bowles to have straight pipes removed.

“And continue to work with Stella and also to work with the municipality (MODL) in continuing to monitor the water quality in the LaHave to ensure that when the straight pipes are cleaned up, that it actually is making a difference in the water quality.”

Nodding says there are other areas that need attention as more straight pipes were found in Garden Lots and Mahone Bay.

Coastal Action has a staff of 26 members and a budget this year just under $1-million, up from $40,000 when they first started their work.
