The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is trying to be proactive as they look to deal with a large portion of their enforcement staff approaching retirement.
Last week, they issued a hiring notice indicating they are looking for staff in all seven of the nation’s fisheries.
While it’s still unknown how many will be hired in this recruitment wave, DFO Enforcement Officer Doug Landry explained the situation DFO faces in the next few years, “We’re looking to hire around 200 officers in the next three years, I believe we have between 650-700 officers currently so it’s a significant portion,” Lloyd said.
Landry says some of the new hires will fill new positions but the majority will be replacements for enforcement officers approaching retirement.
Landry also handles some of the training at the Sydney DFO office where he’s stationed and he encourages anyone considering working for DFO to apply, “This job is perfect for someone who likes the outdoors, and for me, the best part is that every day can be different and present you with unique challenges,” said Lloyd.
Once fully trained DFO enforcement officers make between $66,610-$75,733 per year, though DFO salaries are currently being reviewed.
The current recruiting wave is now open, with applications being accepted until July 9, 2022.
