Donairs and Nova Scotia go together like peanut butter and jelly. The spiced meat on a pita smothered in delicious sauce has become an icon of the province’s food scene. Now, you might just have the chance to wear one.
Well, not a real one, but a costume of one. Right now, the province of Alberta of all places is auctioning off a donair costume and the bid is up to $1,000, after starting off at just $50.
Alberta regularly auctions off items but it’s usually things like electric ballasts or a vice grip. Perfectly useful items but not nearly as intriguing or entertaining as a donair costume.
The costume is causing a stir on social media where people are trying to wrap their head around why someone would bid $1,000 on it, but also debating if it might be a good idea for them to bid $1,050.

The costume does come with a catch though, and it’s a pretty big one. It has lettuce.
Anyone who’s ever eaten a proper Nova Scotian donair knows it has five ingredients: meat, sauce, onions, tomatoes, and pita. Lettuce is not on that list.
