We had a lot of rain last week. More than in quite some time. And while we could have done without all the wind that came along with it, we might have been able to use more rain.
Saturday afternoon, as things started to clear off a bit, I took the dog out for a walk. There are a couple small brooks along our usual route. This time of year they tend to be a bit on the dry side, but when it rains they do fill up. One in particular I was expecting to be a mini-torrent. But there was nothing.
It’s not that we didn’t have rain. I had dragged my boat up on shore and secured it for the storm, but I hadn’t pulled the drain plug. The result was a boat full of water. And I mean full.
But a walk through the woods not far away looked similar to the way it looked a couple weeks before. No water in the brooks and streams. Maybe a couple damp spots, but no real water.
I’m not sure how it worked, but it seems the ground turned into a giant sponge and just soaked up a lot of the rain we got. We certainly needed it. Most of us were probably aware of that. Especially if you are on a well or live near a body of water. It’s been pretty dry over the last few weeks.
You would think the rain we got would change that, but it almost looks like it all got soaked up rather quickly.
We don’t need more wind, or any sort of storm really. Fiona was more than enough.
But, as much as I hate to say it, we could probably use a bit more rain.
