I tend to not spend much time outdoors at night this time of year. It’s cold. It’s dark. It’s not really people friendly, in my mind. But it does get me wondering about some of the things I see at other times of the year.
This started today when a friend shared a video of a squirrel with me online. It was a pretty cute squirrel. But it looked like a flying squirrel.
Going back to that first sentence, I know why I don’t see them this time of year. Unless they knock on the door and ask to come in to watch the hockey game, it’s unlikely we’ll be spending much time together.
But I do see them during the summer. Some times it’s one of those “don’t blink” moments, because they tend to be pretty quick and don’t spend a lot of time hanging around demanding attention. They keep to themselves. So much so that a lot of people don’t even know they exist.
Our usual red squirrels are busy zipping around all over the place, just as they are all summer. Winter doesn’t seem to slow them down much. They apparently don’t hibernate, since according to what I read only bears and bats do that during winters in Nova Scotia. Everything else is still around, only maybe not quite as active.
So what are the flying squirrels up to this time of year? Any idea?
