About 40 Digby residents helped a stranded pod of dolphins.
Last Friday afternoon, a report came in to the Marine Animal Response Society that 16 dolphins were stuck in the mud near Joggins at low-tide.
The society based in Halifax weren’t able to send help in time, but the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Digby Fire Department and even students from Digby High School were willing to help out.
Tonya Wimmer with the society says the response from those willing to help was incredible.
“Not surprisingly, this is how Nova Scotians are. They got the animals back into the water with the tide coming back in. As of last report, all of the animals had made it out to sea,” says Wimmer.
She says two of the dolphins later passed away, but it was a very successful rescue overall.
“Everyone there asked ‘what can we do? How can we help?’ We were lucky to have these folks on the ground.”
