Mental Health Week Donation To Support Strongest Families Institute

The stress and tragedy felt over the past month in Nova Scotia has brought the conversation around the importance of mental health to the forefront.

In support of Mental Health Week, TD Bank donated $100,000 to the Strongest Families Institute (SFI) on May 5 to help support efforts in providing online, phone and distance mental health support.

“It is really beneficial for us to have this additional support so we can help and also support our staff who are working tirelessly,” said Dr. Patricia Lingley-Pottie, President and CEO of Strongest Families Institute.

She says the challenges faced by Nova Scotians as a result of COVID-19 and the Portapique mass shooting has led to increased stress and anxiety for all ages. SFI has seen a 900 percent increase in people accessing their depression and anxiety program over the last two months.

“That is a clear indication that Nova Scotians are reaching out,” said Lingley-Pottie.

“There are more that can reach out and do so from the privacy of their own home. It is a comforting way of receiving help, especially now during this time of restrictions.”

SFI meets the increased demand by focusing on equipping people of all ages with life skills to help them cope. This promotes good mental heath and well-being.

“We urge people to pick up the phone and get the help and support they need,” said Lingley-Pottie.

“There are many convenient services like Strongest Families that are provided to Nova Scotians free of charge. This generous gift will support our services here and across Canada.”
