Drive In Theatres, Arcades and Prank Phone Calls

There are so many rites of passage from my school days that are gone now, not because of Coronavirus but because the world moves on.

The biggest thing I miss is the drive in movie theatre. A double or triple feature, sleeping bags in the back of the station wagon and a case of Pop Shoppe Pop and we kids were set for a Saturday night! Who knows, maybe with social distancing drive in’s will make a comeback!

To keep in touch on the weekends or during vacation, you hung out at the mall, went rollerskating at the rink or played the games at the video arcade.

And then there were the prank phone calls. These in the time before caller ID, when you could call someone up and ask to speak to Harry Wall. “Sorry, you have the wrong number” “Oh, sorry maybe I could speak to Barb Wall?” Eventually they would say “There are no walls here!!”

At which point you would nicely ask , “Well, then, what’s holding your ceiling up?”

What do you wish kids today could experience?
