Tomorrow is officially Earth Day. It is usually observed on April 22 each year, although things happen both before and after. Like today.
Today is the official day for the Lunenburg County Community Recycling Center Earth Day Litter Clean Up. They have been sponsoring the event for a few years now. It is a great day to highlight Earth Day, and it can be done by anybody. You don’t have to be in Lunenburg County. And you don’t have to do it today.
Any day and any place would be fine. The idea is to get out and clean things up a bit. The sad part is, we need to keep doing it.
You would think by now, after doing this for a few years, we would just be able to give the area around us a quick dusting and be done with it. But litter continues to be a problem.
We all have things get away from us at times. That’s understandable. Something that is supposed to be tucked into a pocket slips out and blows away. It happens.
But if you drive around the area and look along the edge of the roads you are likely to see a lot more than just the occasional thing that slipped out of someone’s pocket and blew away.
I see people on a regular basis collecting refundables along the sides of the road. This at least keeps the bottles and cans to a minimum. To bad there wasn’t a way to put a bounty on everything and make it worth while to pick other items up.
But the thing is, it’s not hard to take things to your destination and place them in the garbage or whatever container they belong in. Too many people don’t do it. Which means we still need a day or so each year to encourage people to pick up litter.
At least it’s a nice day to be out in the sun. And if you happen to be taking part, thank you.
