Easter’s On It’s Way

I suddenly came to the realization that Easter isn’t too far off. Just a bit over a week and a half. Which doesn’t seem too close. Unless you want to find time to decorate your own eggs.

This is something I did as a kid. Get a few packets of die, hard boil some eggs and dip them to make them different colours. Maybe even use some natural colours from things you may have around or could easily pick up. Things like red cabbage, various colours of onion skins, beets, even different types of tea, even turmeric can work well. I think a bit of vinegar is also needed.

For some of those, you need a lot to give you decent colour. And those white onions… they don’t work very well. Yellow and red onions work well though.

I have discovered in the past that if you are doing this with children, you should probably dress them in clothes that can be stained. It also helps to clear the area of anything you don’t want to have dyed. But it can be a fun activity.

And then there’s one of my favourites. The dying of the hollow eggs. You know. The empty egg shells. You take an egg, poke a hole in each end, put one end to your mouth and blow.

I’ll admit, when I was first told to do this as a child I thought it was a trap. The egg would explode and I’d be just sitting there with egg all over me. And sometimes it does. But if done correctly, you get a complete egg shell without the egg inside. Then you can dye the egg shell and keep it around for a while.

And if you blow the contents into a bowl, you can cook up the eggs later on.

I haven’t done this for years, but I might just have to give it a go over the weekend. If I can get the grandchildren into the whole idea. But making a mess is usually a pretty easy sell when it comes to kids.
