Federal party leaders weigh in on expected election call

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is poised to trigger a federal election this weekend according to media reports.

Reuters says the information was given to them by sources who requested not to be identified.

The election call is expected this Sunday for September 20th.

Federal Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says on Twitter his party is ready.

He also criticized Trudeau for planning an election in the middle of a pandemic instead of focusing on Canada’s economic recovery.

Meantime, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says on social media the New Democrats would rebuild the country.

He says Canadians have been struggling to find affordable housing, cover health care costs, and are worried about climate change.

Meantime, Canada’s top doctor says the country has officially entered the fourth wave of the pandemic, which is being fueled by the Delta variant.

During the update, Dr. Theresa Tam said her key advice regarding the safety of holding an election at this time would be to continue following public health guidelines.

Federal procurement minister Anita Anand renewed calls for Canadians to make sure they’re fully vaccinated.

The Liberals have a minority in Parliament and will be looking for a mandate on their handling of the pandemic and the economic recovery.
