Festival Season

It’s that time of year. And thankfully we can get back to doing things together.

Summer officially arrived the first of the week and we are now getting into festival and event season. We have a lot of them around our area throughout the entire summer and into the fall. I’m sure you have your favourites.

Being from Liverpool, Privateer Days has long been one of my favourites. Over the years, I have participated in various ways. This year, I just hope to enjoy some of the activities.

At one time I may have raced home to throw on my uniform and pretend to be an 1780’s era British soldier. Dressing in several lawyers of wool at the end of June can be a challenge all to itself. But it was fun. Unfortunately, life got in the way, and there were other demands on my time. Now I’ve lost a fair bit of weight, and I’m not sure that outfit would fit these days. And while they had belts back in those days, they were for carrying things, not for holding your pants up. And I’m not sure anyone really needs to see a British soldier with his breeches around his ankles.

There was also another small issue that I hadn’t considered. We don’t often think about things like moths these days. Most of our clothing is made from things moths don’t want to eat. But while I forgot the moths, they did not forget me, and set about turning parts of my uniform into snack food.

So between the holes and the falling pants, it’s probably best I find other ways to enjoy the weekend.

But there are plenty of thing to choose from. And the season is just getting underway.

I won’t try to list all of the various events and celebrations that happen around the area over the coming weeks. There are a lot of them, and I’m sure we all have our favourites.

But the season has started. Get out and enjoy it.
