First Day Of School

My Facebook feed was jammed with children I don’t know today. I’m sure a lot of others were the same.

I no longer have children at home that I have to get ready for school. In fact, it’s been a while. I don’t have to worry much about the first day of school. But it seems to be a big thing for those that do.

I know there was the odd picture taken around this time of year, but I can’t remember the pose on the front step, freshly scrubbed and dressed in my new finery, ready for that first day. There may be a picture of the first day. You know. The first day ever. But after that very first first day of school, I can’t remember it being a big deal.

Honestly, I think it was an accomplishment just getting me out of bed and out the door. Remembering to take a picture seemed to be a bit too much. And it wasn’t like everyone had a camera in their hands at all times. Maybe that was part of the problem. You had to plan to take a picture.

You had to make sure you had film. The camera had to be properly loaded and ready to go. You didn’t just grab your phone, jab you finger at it a couple time and be done with it. It took a bit of thought and work. And then you had to get the pictures developed. And by the time you got them back, you had to remember why you took them in the first place.

Today, everyone can snap a photo and post it on social media before the child sets foot on the bus.

Maybe that was it. We just didn’t hold still long enough to get pictures taken.

I still can’t remember the first day of school picture being a thing. Or maybe they’re all just hiding in a drawer, waiting to surprise me at a later time.
