Fish plant destroyed by fire in Cumberland County

A fish plant in Cumberland County has been destroyed by fire.

It happened Monday afternoon in the main building at the Aquashell processing facility in Wallace.

Fire crews had to battle the blaze during very blustery conditions.

Nearby homes were evacuated, and power was turned off for hundreds.

In a statement on social media, Tuesday, the Wallace Fire Department says the plant being destroyed is more than just a loss of business.

“It’s the loss of jobs, routines, and a place that powered our local economy and brought people together every day,” says the department.

“For many families, this plant was a livelihood, and we know the weight of that is being held across our community.”

The Pugwash Fire Department says it was a tough day where wind and temperatures work against crews but also a day where people came together to support each other in any way they could.

MLA Elisabeth Smith-McCrossin says she sends her thoughts and concern to those affected.

“Aquashell has been an important part of our local business and seafood community for many years, and the loss of this plant will be deeply felt across the region,” says Smith-McCrossin.
