The federal fisheries minister says she’ll review the alleged mistreatment of two Mi’kmaw fishers in Nova Scotia’s Shelburne County.
Diane LeBouthillier says allegations brought forward by the fishers are troubling.
The two say they were arrested by DFO officers on March 26 for fishing elvers, and then left without footwear or phones hours away from their home.
The minister says they’re committed to working together to eradicate systemic racism, and a thorough review will shed light on the matter.
LeBouthillier says the review will be independent and transparent, with leadership from Indigenous voices.
The elver fishery is closed, but Mi’kmaw fishers say they have treaty rights to fish for a moderate livelihood.
DFO has made dozens of arrests this season.
