An annual event will continue this weekend to honour those who have lost their lives in the fishery.
The Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Service will take place Sunday at 2:00pm on the waterfront near the Fisheries Museum.
Various area churches will conduct the ceremony while their choirs will be joined by the Bridgewater Fire Department band.
Mayor Rachel Bailey says it means a lot to be reading the roll of honour.
“It’s a tremendous honour for me. I have very deep roots in this community. I have a great-grandfather whose name is inscribed on the Fishermen’s Memorial monument.”
Bailey says this event isn’t just about remembering those we’ve lost.
“Hopefully keeps us mindful of always being vigilant and ensuring that people that are still going to sea and who are earning their lives on the sea do so in the safest way possible.”
After the service, wreaths will be placed on a working fishing boat where they will be committed to the sea in memory of those lives lost.
