Former H.R.M. mayor to be sworn in as N.S. lieutenant-governor Friday

Former Halifax mayor Mike Savage will be sworn in as Nova Scotia’s lieutenant-governor on Friday afternoon.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment in October.

The mayor of the HRM for 12 years, Savage announced in February he would not run in the fall municipal election.

He was also the Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour for seven years.

Savage replaces Arthur J. LeBlanc, who was appointed as the province’s lieutenant-governor in 2017.

The swearing-in ceremony will be at 2 p.m. at Province House.

According to a release from Trudeau, “Lieutenant Governors are the personal representatives of His Majesty The King of Canada in their respective provinces. They fulfill the roles and functions of the Crown, including granting Royal Assent to provincial laws.” They are appointed by the Governor General of Canada on the recommendation of the prime minster and serve terms of at least five years.
