It’s a story that has launched a thousand memes. Maybe even more.
A man in Turkey was out having a few beverages with friends. He may have had one too many. Maybe even two. And somehow, he managed to wander off from his friends into the woods.
It wasn’t too long before family and friends realized he was missing. Since he was last seen heading into the forest, they quickly put together a search party and headed into the woods looking for him.
Now the fun party. The man, Beyhan Mutlu, who was wandering around in the woods, came across the search party. Being the good citizen that he is, he decided he should help with the search, so he joined the search party, combing the forest, looking for… himself.
The search went on for a while, but when he heard searchers calling his name, he finally clued in who they were searching for, at which point he told them he was right there, helping out with the search. Police apparently then took his statement and gave him a drive home.
So now the internet is alive with memes about people trying to find themselves. You hear people say it a lot, but I don’t think it means you’re supposed to join the search party. But it was nice that people were concerned enough to try to find him. For some people, wandering around the woods is no fun.
Beyhan seems to be one of those people who is not overly directionally challenged. He may have been able to find his way out of the forest on his own, although, again, it’s nice to know that others were concerned.
A lot of us were taught to notice things around us to avoid that kind of situation, but there are many who were not. I can remember going for a walk with a friend. We were looking for an old trail, but it was overgrown and we couldn’t find it. When I mentioned I couldn’t find the trail, he got a bit panicky. Until I explained the road we had driven in on was just down the hill and if you looked hard enough you could still see it.
There are those who just have no sense of direction. Then there are those who just need to find themselves. Thankfully, in this case, it all worked out for the best.
