Free parking at hospitals, healthcare facilities coming May 1

It is going to be free to park at hospitals and healthcare facilities in Nova Scotia, very soon.

The province says there will be a validation system will be used on some sites to make sure those parking are patients, visitors, healthcare workers and staff.

Anyone else will have to pay.

Specific details will vary depending on the location.

Free parking at healthcare facilities was a campaign promise from Premier Tim Houston.

“I know people have been eager to see this change. Nova Scotians shouldn’t have to worry about parking fees when they’re sick and seeking healthcare or caring for our loved ones,” says Houston in a news release.

Nova Scotia Health has 97 parking lots across the province, 39 charge for parking.

The total cost is $19 million and was included in Budget 2025-26.

It goes into effect, Thursday, May 1.
