I’ve though about it. I haven’t actually put anything in yet, but I have thought about it. The last two years, with frost warnings going into mid-June have made me a little cautious, but this year was looking pretty good. Although there were rumours of possible frost last night.
The time is coming. I don’t put in a big garden. usually just a few tomatoes and maybe some other things. Mostly things I just want to experiment with.
For one thing, I have a bunch of old pine trees that hang over the area near my garden. I’d move it elsewhere, but there’s no getting away from these trees. I’ve thought about having them taken down, but that may upset the neighbours, seeing as how the trees are not actually on my property.
But the pine trees tend to make the soil a bit acidic and keep things a touch too shady. So it is more of a place to play with growing stuff.
I have a few seeds I have saved from over the winter. My daughter actually had a green pumpkin last year at Halloween and we kept a few seeds to see if we can get them to grow. The same for kabocha squash. I discovered those over the winter. I have been a long time fan of buttercup squash, then started to get partial to sweet mama squash. I like a nice dry squash and the kabocha seem a bit more consistent. So I may give a couple of them a try.
But I have to be careful with things like that. As I say, I don’t have a really large area, and not a over abundance of sun. So anything that grows on a vine tends to head off looking for greener pastures. There have been years in the fall I have only managed to locate some of my crop by grabbing a vine and pulling, hoping to find the other end, wondering if there is anything out there.
But I do like a few fresh tomatoes, and maybe a hot pepper or two. So it’s almost time to get them in the ground. Hopefully the weather will co-operate.
