Good Year For Deer

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems to be a pretty good year for deer.

Not that’s there’s been any shortage of them in the past few years. There sure seems to be a lot of them. Or maybe they are giving up living in the woods and just moving closer to us.

But I also seem to be seeing a lot of young ones this year. I usually catch site of a few, but there seems to be more than a few this year.

Over the past couple of weeks I spoke with one person who spotted a doe with three fawns in tow. Not that unusual, but there seem to be more in roughly the same area.

I sat and watched one doe with a rather active fawn playing along the shore of an island one day last week. The little one was jumping around, running and just being playful. The doe would just graze and shake her head as the fawn dashed around her.

Now I do have to say, this is one of the reasons why I like an electric trolling motor on a boat. It’s quiet, so the animals don’t pay much attention. And since I have a bow mount motor with a foot control, I can sit in my boat and keep fairly still while still following along watching. I do get the odd questioning look from the deer, but they usually just continue on with what they are doing and ignore me.

But back to the deer.

Not too far away from all the others I was hearing about and seeing, I spotted another group of deer. A doe with two fawns and a spike horn hanging out with them. They wouldn’t cooperate for a family portrait, so I could only get two in the frame at any one time. Still a lot of fun to watch.

There were other deer in the same area as well, but a half dozen new additions in a fairly small area seems like a a bit of a population boom.

We will probably find out for sure this fall, when they get old enough to wander out in front of cars. Hopefully it doesn’t happen, since it really isn’t good for us or them.

But if you like to watch animals, it seems to be a good year for it.
