Gross Out Time – Crazy Things Your Dog Ate

I swear dogs are part of the goat family because they will eat anything. (Or at least give it a good try)

My first experience with dogs eating anything was when I was a tween and my pet beagle Missie decided to eat a ball of burdocks that my brother and I were tossing back and forth. Burdocks are those nasty little seed pods with hooks that were the inspiration for Velcro. Well, you can just imagine the mess that those little hooks made of Missie’s stomach. For the rest of her life we had to coat her food in cod liver oil to get her to eat it and keep it down.

Our much beloved yellow lab, Autumn, who’s been gone for half a dozen years or more once wolfed down a dead bird in one mighty gulp, and the bird wasn’t small either. What was even more disgusting was when she upchucked the thing a couple of hours later. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything half as gross in any horror movie, and I’ve seen a lot of them. I still get the occasional nightmare about that one.

Finally, our black lab Misty (she’s a rescue) has food issues because of a traumatic incident that happened before we got her. She’s a typical dog outside – sniffing and looking for disgusting things to eat, but we police the backyard fairly well to prevent her getting those extra snacks. However inside is another story. We also have three cats and Misty is so sneaky about scarfing down both the cats’ dry and wet food that we have to be on guard at feeding time to keep her out of their bowls. Then the bowls have to go up on the counter out of her reach.

How are we making out with her? I think we’re doing well but I swear the dog meowed yesterday.
