Happy Earth Day!

When it comes right down to it, this is probably the best Earth Day in years.

Pollution in major centers has dropped dramatically. The down side is that people aren’t working and products aren’t being made, but air and water have cleared up quite a bit. If we could only figure out how to have the jobs and stuff without the bad side effects, but if nothing else, we are proving the earth can recover.

Animals are roaming many urban areas. It didn’t take long for them to pop up, although the truth is, they’ve been in those areas all along. They just weren’t showing themselves. We went indoors, they came out.

But in other ways, it might not be so good.

I Googled things I can do for Earth Day.

In looking over the list of things we can do for the planet on Earth Day, or any day, you find things like “use less plastic, take reusable bags”. That doesn’t work so well at the moment. I was doing fairly well in remembering to take my reusable bags, until this Covid thing happened.

I’ve already switched most of my light bulbs, but you pretty much have to. Finding the old style incandescent bulbs would now involve a quest that would test Indiana Jones.

Plant a tree. I have enough trees at the moment. There is a beaver or two around that seems to think I have too many. So I may have to plant a tree or two to keep said beaver entertained, but for the moment, he’s on his own.

I already practice the three R’s, but then again, that’s another one that is sort of enforced.

I can always pick up more trash around. There always seems to be what a previous neighbour of mine used to call “winter dandelions”. Basially, garbage that appears from nowhere each spring. There always seems to be plenty of that around. And there is a Facebook page called the Nova Scotia One Garbage Bag Challenge that all of us can help out with, picking up trash as we go for a walk.

I noticed Mike mentioned hugging a tree earlier today. Supposedly, it is good for you to hug a tree for five minutes. And I guess it can’t hurt. Although the squirrels might get a bit jealous.

But there are ways we can celebrate Earth Day. Have a good one.
