One of my favorite parts about living on the South Shore, is the access we have to the coast and beautiful beaches.
Often as we head to a beach on a sunny day, we don’t think about how we are affecting the ocean every day and the damage we are doing with plastics and garbage in general.
With it being #WorldOceansDay, I checked out worldoceansday.ca , and some of the facts they shared were shocking:
“There will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050 if we continue on the path we are on.
Scientists believe 90% of the plastics in our oceans come from the rivers and lakes, all of which flow into our oceans. Each of us can stop the flow of plastics.
Plus we have seen the videos of poor seabirds dying from consuming plastic and turtles and whales entangled in garbage. It’s heartbreaking and we need to do what we can to change and help our environment and oceans.
How can you become more educated and help the ocean? You can find educational materials at worldoceansday.ca and to donate, you can check out sites like Ocean Conservancy.
